Staying Aware with Pokémon Go

Pokemon Go

Since its release on July 6th, the interactive smartphone game Pokémon Go has become an internet sensation and it’s no wonder why! For the first time ever, Pokémon fans are able to take on the true role of a Pokémon trainer and “catch-them-all” by exploring the world beyond their front door.

The augmented reality game has been widely successful in motivating players to get up and moving by requiring that players physically walk to play the game (total game changer)!

The game uses Google Maps to guide players to public places listed as, “pokéstops” or “gyms” where players can collect more supplies, battle other players, and capture unique pokémon along the way.

Before playing the game, an initial screen urges players to stay alert and remain aware of their surroundings at all times.

Yet, reports continue to emerge of Pokémon Go players finding themselves in unsafe situations.

"New York man crashes into tree playing Pokémon Go while driving; Pennsylvania teen run over crossing highway" - Daily News"2 men fall off bluff in Encinitas while playing "Pokemon Go," authorities say on KTLA.com"

Since then, several Police forces have released statements asking Pokémon Go players to exercise extra caution when playing the game.

"Yeah we know Charizard is rare but don't let Officer Monello & his new partner catch you! Don't #CatchEmAll & drive!" - NYPD 19th Precint official Twitter

"Be mindful on what you play online, A String of armed robberies perpetrated by suspects who targeted their victims using Pokémon Go. RH" - The official Twitter account of the Philadelphia Police's 35th District.

Along with a few helpful tips!

One suggestion for safer game play is to enable the vibrate function on the app when playing. By tapping the "poké ball" on the main screen and then selecting the settings icon, players can choose to enable the sound or vibrate function. Once this is enabled, players will feel a vibration when a pokémon is nearby, leaving the player’s eyes free to look up and evaluate their surroundings.
